STATE NEGLIGENCE

Whenever I walk through the streets of Ghana's capital Accra I count churches to the extent that I get tired and stop counting. My problem however is not with the number of churches but the number of energetic men and women found in the churches praying all times of the week.
CHURCH CONGREGATION
This phenomenon has been prevalent throughout the fourth republic and maybe beyond. I do not blame them for being in the church everyday. Rather I ask why they are in the churches? They are there to pray for a breakthrough in their businesses, pray for employment and a cure to their sicknesses among many others. Why the church?
They choose the church because they have lost hope in the governments to be able to solve their problems. They tend to rely on the church with the hope of finding a remedy to their problems from God. The people's lost of hope in their governments is the reason why so many energetic men and women are found in the churches praying all day. The people's hope in and reliance on the church do not solve the problem but rather compound it. How? They divert the people's energies from secular concerns and as a result diminish their resolve to put much pressure on governments to address their problems.
In this same respect, experts who are supposed to engage in breakthrough researches for solutions to the people's problems do not do because they believe the people have the church to turn to when the need arises and there is not much pressure on them as a result.
The bottom line is that the people's reliance on the church seems to absolve the governments and experts in positions of authority of any responsibility. Under such a circumstance people do not apply their physical and mental abilities and energies to solving their problems but to depend on God. The adverse effect of the people's reliance on church is enormous and is high time the people of Ghana minimized their over reliance on God.
Now is the time for Ghanaians to be concerned with secular issues and apply their abilities and energies to dealing with the many problems that confront them daily. I do not by this discredit the church. I would not since I am a Catholic. I rather think the church should concentrate on making people more moral and discipline as its own contribution to building a better Ghana.
