AN OPEN LETTER TO GHANA NATIONAL SERVICE SECRETARIAT

PLIGHT OF NATIONAL SERVICE PERSONNEL
Dear National Director,

I am writing to bring to your attention the challenges faced by National Service Personnels (NSPs) and propose a solution to address them. While it is a source of pride for many Ghanaian youths to enroll in the national service scheme after completing their tertiary education, the reality is that this joy is often overshadowed by pain, agony, and stress. The scheme has remained unchanged since its inception, which gives the impression that the leaders of the nation do not care about the welfare of those who are mandated to serve the nation.

This year's (2018/2019) national service has been particularly challenging, with the scheme trying to delete ghost names and prevent the "no allawa" syndrome that discredits the program. The registration process has also been more expensive than in previous years, which may discourage personnel from accepting postings to remote areas, especially in less developed districts of the north and some southern sectors.

It is imperative that the service scheme strategizes to make the service more attractive to personnel. This does not necessarily mean increasing allowances, but rather making infrastructure readily available, particularly in terms of accommodation. This would reduce the stress of having to search for accommodation in various posting places, which often leads to the exhaustion of the first month's allowance before it hits the officers' accounts.

There is a proverbial saying in Aakan that "a stranger has wide-opened eyes but sees nothing," which has unfortunately been the case despite the growing and advancement in human and infrastructural development. In summary, the plight of national service personnel needs urgent attention, and I urge you to take action to address these challenges.

Yours faithfully,
KOKOIH JOHN KENNEDY
