WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISTAKES?
themes
NEVER ENTANGLE YOURSELF WITH SOMETHING THAT IS NOT
YOURS. MOST OF A TIME PEOPLE TIE THEIR NECKS WITH THE QUEEN’S LANGUAGE,
ESPECIALLY THOSE IN GHANA AND SOME ANGLOPHONE COUNTRIES IN AFRICA. I USUALLY
FEEL PROUD OF MY NIGERIAN COUNTERPARTS WHO SPEAK WITH THEIR ACCENT AS COMPARED
TO THOSE IN GHANA WHO SPEAK WITH THE SO-CALLED SLANG IN THEIR SPEECH. JUST
RECENTLY I NOTICED THAT A LADY FROM GHANA BLOCKED A GUY ON SOCIAL MEDIA
PLATFORM WHATSAPP SIMPLY BECAUSE OF GRAMMATICALLY ERROR IN HIS SENTENCE.
AWAY FROM THAT, NOT LONG AGO SOME GHANAIANS INCLUDING
MYSELF TOOK TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO REGISTER OUR DISPLEASURE IN THE WAY AND MANNER
SOME MEDIA PUNDITS MADE FUN OF THE SPEECH OF GHANA’S RISING ACTOR, ABRAHAM
ATTAH. THANKS THEY TOOK AWAY PRIDE TO APOLOGIZE FOR THEIR ACTIONS AND I HOPE
THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN IN THE FUTURE.
WHEN THE TIDES WERE HIGH, MANASSEH AWUNI AZURE,
GHANA’S PROUD JOURNALIST TOOK TO THE ISSUE TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND
THAT THEY DID THAT NOT TO MOCK HIM AND HERE IS WHERE I SAY I AGREE TO DISAGREE
WITH HIM.
BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL I WAS THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT MADE
FUN OF PEOPLE WITH POOR GRAMMAR BUT LATER FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS NOT THE BEST
WAY BECAUSE EVEN THE OWNERS OF THE LANGUAGE MAKE MISTAKES HOW MUCH MORE WE
LEARNERS.
THIS IS NOT THE ISSUE I AM HERE TO RAISE BUT THE TITLE
“WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISTAKES?” YOU WILL BEAR WITH ME THAT WHEN READING
A SCRIPT AND IT CONTAINS GRAMMATICAL AND TYPOGRAPHICAL MISTAKES IT MAKES THE
READING BORING AND UNPLEASANT.
MANY HAVE REGISTERED THEIR DISPLEASURE ON WHAT WENT
WRONG IN THE INDEPENDENCE DAY BROCHURE WHICH WAS PREPARED BY A PRIVATE COMPANY
INSTEAD OF THE INFORMATION SERVICE DEPARTMENT (ISD) WHICH WAS FULL OF MISTAKES.
MY WORRY IS WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MISTAKES?
I AM NOT A LOVER OF PRINT NEWS BUT QUITE RECENTLY I
DECIDED TO READ TWO NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS AND FELT SAD TO SEE A MISTAKE IN THEM.
I DO NOT KNOW WHETHER IT WAS AN OVERSIGHT OR TYPING MISTAKE BUT WHOSE JOB IS IT
TO CHECK THESE ERRORS?
POINTING IT OUT CLEAR IS THAT I WAS READING DAILY
GRAPHIC AND GHANAIAN TIMES WHEN I DISCOVERED SUCH MISTAKES AND MY HEART PUMPED.
YES, WHO AM I TO TALK ABOUT IT IS WHAT SOMEONE IS SAYING NOW. BELIEVE IT OR NOT
THIS MEDIOCRITY IS WHAT CAUSED US THE INTERNATIONAL MOCKERY ON 6TH
MARCH, 2016.
MY BRETHREN, NO HUMAN IS PERFECT BUT INASMUCH AS
POSSIBLE WHEN GIVEN A JOB WE SHOULD TRY OUR BEST TO PREVENT PREVENTABLE
MISTAKES. IF YOU DOUBT THIS WRITING PICK THE 7TH MARCH EDITION OF
GHANAIAN TIMES AND FLIP THROUGH TO PAGE THREE, PARAGRAPH ONE OF THE STORY
“GHANAIAN WOMAN JAILED IN USA FOR SMUGGLING HEROIN IN FISH”, THERE ONE WILL
FIND THE PREVENTABLE MISTAKE THE GRAPHIC DID.
AWAY FROM GHANAIAN TIMES, 16TH FEBRUARY,
2016 MADE A MISTAKE WHICH IN MY OPINION SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. WHOSE JOB IS
IT TO CHECK THESE ERRORS? ON PAGE SIXTY-TWO OF THE PAPER DATED 16TH
FEBRUARY, 2016 A SPORTS STORY WRITTEN BY ONE BERNARD NEEQUAYE WITH THE TITLE
“HOPE FOR THE FUTURE CRY FOR SPONSORSHIP”. TO EASE THE STRESS FROM MY READERS,
THE MISTAKE THERE WAS “CUB” INSTEAD OF “CLUB”. I BLAME NOT THE WRITER BUT THE
EDITORS WHO WERE SUPPOSED TO GO THROUGH THE SCRIPTS BEFORE BEING PRINTED AND
SOLD ON THE GHANAIAN AND INTERNATIONAL MARKETS.
I AM A MERE UNDERGRADUATE STILL STRUGGLING TO GET A
CERTIFICATE. MY WORRY IS THOSE WHO ARE GIVEN THE JOB SHOULD TRY THEIR BEST TO
PRODUCE THE BEST. I KNOW SUCH OF SIMILAR MISTAKES HAD OCCURRED IN THE PAST AND
WERE CORRECTED BEFORE PRINTOUT AND OTHER WENT UNBOOKED OR UNCONCERNED. THIS IS
THE TIME WE NEED TO SIT UP AND STEER OUR AFFAIRS AND SHOW TO THE WORLD THAT WE
ARE CAPABLE OF MANAGING OUR AFFAIRS AND WE NEED NO WHITE MAN TO MANAGE IT.
MY HEART SADDENS WHEN I HEAR THAT A BLACK MAN IS ALWAYS
A BLACK MAN AND CANNOT DO ANYTHING BETTER FOR HIMSELF BUT WHITE MAN CAN DO BETTER
AND BEST AND MAKE GOOD FORTUNES THAN THE BLACK.
THIS IS JUST A PIECE OF ADVICE. WHEN GIVEN ANY JOB DO
IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART.
THE WRITER IS A STUDENT OF GHANA INSTITUTE OF
JOURNALISM, A MEMBER OF NATIONS OF AFRICA AND THE NATIONAL TELLER NEWS OUTLET.
